Why I Started Building Custom Kydex Holsters in Colorado
If you've ever carried a firearm every day, you know one thing quickly becomes obvious: not all holsters are created equal.
Storm Mountain Tactical started because I couldn't find a holster that fit my carry setup the way I wanted it to. I tried different options, made modifications, and spent plenty of money searching for the perfect fit. Eventually, I decided to build one myself.
What started as a personal project quickly became a passion.
Over the last five years, I've built custom Kydex holsters for concealed carriers, first responders, competitive shooters, and everyday gun owners who wanted a holster tailored to their specific firearm and carry preferences. Every holster is built one at a time by hand, not mass-produced on an assembly line.
Why Kydex?
Kydex has become one of the most popular materials for modern holsters for good reason.
Unlike leather, Kydex maintains its shape over time, provides consistent retention, and resists moisture, sweat, and harsh weather conditions. Whether you're carrying during a Colorado summer hike or spending long hours on the range, a properly built Kydex holster delivers reliable performance day after day.
The material also allows for precise firearm retention and accommodates modern accessories such as weapon lights, red dot optics, suppressor-height sights, and concealment claws.
The Story Behind Storm Mountain Tactical
After moving from Missouri to Loveland, Colorado, I found myself living near Storm Mountain. The area has a reputation for local Bigfoot sightings, and the story stuck with me.
That's where the name Storm Mountain Tactical came from.
The Bigfoot logo is laser engraved on Storm Mountain Tactical's FOMI clips, giving those holsters a unique signature that customers immediately recognize. It's a small detail that reflects the company's Colorado roots and commitment to craftsmanship.
Built One at a Time
Storm Mountain Tactical is a one-man operation.
Every holster is designed, formed, trimmed, assembled, and inspected by me in my dedicated workshop trailer. When you place an order, you're not buying a product that came off a shelf somewhere. You're getting a holster built specifically for your firearm and your carry setup.
Customers can choose options including:
- Inside the Waistband (IWB) or Outside the Waistband (OWB)
- Light-bearing configurations
- Multiple clip options
- Concealment claws
- Various Kydex colors and patterns
- Right- or left-hand carry
The goal is simple: build a holster that works for your specific needs.
Why Custom Matters
Your firearm setup is unique.
You may run a red dot. You may carry with a weapon light. You may prefer a certain cant angle or attachment style. A mass-produced holster often forces you to compromise.
A custom holster is built around the way you actually carry.
That means better comfort, better concealment, and more confidence every time you put it on.
